“The local government in Lima, Peru, issued a statement accusing La República newspaper and its reporting team of sabotaging trains on the Lima-Chosica railway line. The accusation followed a report exposing the poor condition of locomotives and train cars — some more than 40 years old and decommissioned in the United States — that were brought to Peru by Lima Mayor Rafael López Aliaga with no clear planning.
Following the statement, which was shared by the mayor, La República was targeted on platforms including Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and X. The journalist who authored the report, Grecia Infante, received death threats on her social media accounts. Her family was also contacted and warned to stop reporting on the case.
In a public alert, the Press and Society Institute (IPYS) condemned the attacks and called on the Municipality of Lima to refrain from making accusations against Infante without evidence.”
