"A Peruvian journalist who was recently shot by hitmen died this Friday [Dec. 26] in a hospital in Lima, a press guild reported, bringing to four the number of reporters killed by organized crime this year in the South American country.
Mitzar Castillejos, 34, was shot on Dec. 12 as he left his home in the town of Aguaytía, in the Ucayali region, on his way to the Latin Plus radio station, where he hosted a news program. He was known for reporting on alleged corruption involving local authorities. […] Castillejos sustained severe gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen and was transferred to a Lima hospital a week ago in an effort to save his life.
‘It has been a disastrous year for the exercise of press freedom in Peru,’ the National Association of Journalists said".
