Peruvian journalist rejects congressional summons in Odebrecht probe

"Peruvian journalist Gustavo Gorriti, head of the investigative outlet IDL-Reporteros, said he will not comply with a summons from a congressional committee investigating the country’s plea agreement with Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.

In a public letter, Gorriti questioned the legitimacy and impartiality of the multiparty investigative committee, which is led by lawmaker Alejandro Muñante. The committee had summoned Gorriti to testify on Monday, Aug. 4, about his knowledge of the Odebrecht deal in his capacity overseeing IDL-Reporteros.

In response, Gorriti said all information gathered by his newsroom had already been published and remains publicly available on the outlet’s website.

He also noted that, as a journalist, he is protected by the constitutional right to maintain professional secrecy and the confidentiality of sources, which are rights also recognized by congressional regulations."
