"On April 8, the president of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, publicly presented a draft Law on Freedom of Expression, Audiovisual Media and Digital Platforms. This initiative aims to update the anachronistic regulatory framework on freedom of expression that dates back to 1962 – Law No. 6132 on Expression and Dissemination of Thought –, seeking to update itself to international standards and regulations on the matter.
The proposal was developed by the Consultative Commission for Freedom of Expression (CCLEXRD, for its acronym in Spanish) - created by Abinader in 2022 -, made up of journalists, jurists specialized in fundamental rights and media directors. To collect input for the legal text, the CCLEXRD held consultative meetings, work tables and received contributions from multiple interested parties."
