“News and media organizations such as the Press Freedom Foundation (FLIP, for its acronym in Spanish) condemned Colombian President Gustavo Petro on Monday [Sept. 2] for calling women journalists 'mafia dolls' in yet another attack on the press.

On Aug. 30, during the inauguration of the new ombudsman, Iris Marín, the president claimed that 'the women journalists of power, the 'dolls of the mafia,' constructed the narrative that protests are terrorism as well as the criminalization of the legitimate right to protest and say stop.'

The ombudsman herself rejected the statement saying 'there is no room for stigmatization or offenses against women journalists. Nothing justifies it,' but the president - far from apologizing - reiterated on his X account (formerly Twitter) that: 'when I speak of journalists of the establishment, I speak precisely of those who are not at the service of the citizens but of those who are on the payroll of dark powers.'”
