"The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES, for its Spanish acronym) denounced on Monday (July 10) the arbitrary detention of one of its colleagues, who was imprisoned for more than 11 months and who was tortured during the  “state of exception” in force since March 2022.

'The Association of Journalists of El Salvador (APES) condemns the arbitrary and unsubstantiated capture of community journalist Víctor Barahona, who was unjustly imprisoned for almost a year,' said the statement. It added that 'for 11 months and 12 days, Barahona remained in conditions of overcrowding, torture and without access to medical attention' in various prisons.

'APES also condemns that when Barahona was released on May 19, 2023, nobody informed his family, he was not given any letter of release or similar documentation, as he was only told that he was leaving prison at the request of the prosecutor,' added the organization. It said the community journalist had been accused by police officers of collaborating with gangs."
