"The killing of journalist Javier Antonio Hércules Salinas has sparked widespread criticism across Honduran society, particularly targeting the Protection Mechanism overseen by the Secretariat of Human Rights (SEDH for its initials in Spanish).
It was the minister of the SEDH, Héctor Becerra, who revealed that Hércules had been granted five protection measures by the government’s Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders, Journalists, Social Communicators, and Justice Officials.
Representatives from human rights organizations acknowledged that, on paper, Hércules had security measures in place — but agreed the protections were inadequate given the threats he faced."
