Two media workers killed in Honduras over weekend

Renowned radio host, sports commentator and former footballer Carlos Gilberto Aguirre was fatally stabbed in the early hours of Sunday, June 1, in the municipality of Juticalpa, Honduras. El Heraldo newspaper confirmed through sources at the Public Prosecutor’s morgue that Aguirre died from multiple stab wounds. So far, the perpetrators and motives behind the crime remain unknown.

That same day, the killing of journalist Javier Antonio Hércules Salinas was also reported. Originally from El Salvador, Hércules worked for the television channel A Todo Noticias (ATN) and was shot multiple times in the Elder Romero neighborhood, in the municipality of Santa Rosa de Copán, western Honduras.

The journalist, who also worked as a taxi driver, had previously been abducted in 2023. Following the incident, the Association for Democracy and Human Rights (Asopodehu, by its acronym in Spanish) took his case to the State’s Protection Mechanism in an effort to safeguard his life.
