“The congress of the state of Sinaloa in Mexico unanimously approved legislation to create the first-ever Special Prosecutor’s Office focused on human rights, as well as the protection of human rights defenders and journalists. This agency will be the first of its kind in Mexico to operate at the local level.
In Sinaloa, since September of last year—when the conflict between the Mayos and Chapitos criminal groups escalated—attacks against the press have increased significantly. As of the end of April, 65 attacks had been documented, an average of 5.5 per day during that period.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office is required to begin operations this year, within 90 days of the law’s publication in the state’s official gazette.”
