"In 2024, a total of 3,766 attacks against the press were documented across 17 Latin American countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. In 49.3% of the cases recorded, State actors were primarily responsible, according to the seventh edition of the Sombra report on press freedom in Latin America.
Although the total number of alerts decreased slightly compared to 2023, the new report warns that this does not reflect an improvement, but rather a ‘rearrangement of attacks’ and the consolidation of self-censorship, news deserts and the forced exile of journalists.
The 2024 Sombra report, prepared by the Red Voces del Sur (VDS), highlights a scenario of extreme risk where State repression, organized crime and systemic impunity threaten the right to information, weakening democracy in the region."
