"The Criminal Chamber of the [Guatemalan] Supreme Court of Justice overturned the conviction imposed on [journalist] Jose Rubén Zamora for the crime of money laundering in June 2023. This was confirmed by his son, Ramón Zamora.
[...]
This ruling acquits Zamora of the six-year sentence imposed on him in 2023. At the same time, it orders the start of a new [trial].
‘This allows my father to defend himself. We hope that this time there will be no criminalization or persecution of his lawyers,’ Ramón Zamora, his son, told Agencia Ocote.
The ruling responds to a request filed by Zamora's defense team, which on Sept. 23 reiterated that the conviction lacks legal basis. They argued that during the trial, evidence that could prove the legality of the money was rejected. [..] Even with this favorable ruling, the journalist will remain in prison for the other two cases he faces."
