The challenge of providing protection to threatened journalists in Mexico

"The murder of two journalists in Tijuana in a week once again raises the complexity of providing security to journalists in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries for journalism and where protection mechanisms are overwhelmed or inefficient.

Photographer Margarito Martínez and reporter Lourdes Maldonado were murdered on January 17 and last Sunday, respectively.

Both reporters, who were shot at, had reported threats and requested protection from the security mechanism in Baja California (northwest of Mexico).

'This mechanism fails again when journalists feel most vulnerable,' Sonia de Anda, a reporter from Tijuana and advisor to the state system for the protection of human rights defenders and communicators, told AFP."
