"On the night of Friday, July 25, Marcelo Ruiz, a correspondent for TC Televisión network in [the Ecuadorian province of] Manabí, was the victim of an armed attack. The journalist was driving along the Portoviejo–Santa Ana road. According to preliminary information, another vehicle intercepted the journalist near El Guabito neighborhood. Several shots were fired at the journalist.
[…] Ruiz is in stable condition, according to sources cited by TC Televisión. He was shot in the arms. After evaluating him, doctors performed surgery to remove the bullets lodged in his arms at the Portoviejo Specialty Hospital.
[The journalism advocacy organization] Fundamedios confirmed the incident through its official channels and said that 'Marcelo Ruiz is in serious condition and is receiving medical attention.' It also called on the authorities to investigate the case quickly and apprehend those responsible."
