Two new lawsuits seek to censor books by Mexican journalist Hernán Gómez Bruera, Artículo 19 warns

“ARTICLE 19 - Office for Mexico and Central America reiterates its concern over the two civil lawsuits and one criminal proceeding against Hernán Gómez Bruera, journalist and author of the books 'Traición en Palacio: El negocio de la justicia en la 4T' (Treason in the Palace: The Business of Justice in times of the 4T) and ‘El ministro del poder: Un infiltrado en la 4T’ (The Minister of Power: An Infiltrator in the 4T).

Last year, the journalist was sued for moral damages by a media outlet, and on May 14 the journalist confirmed that criminal proceedings had also been initiated against him and publisher Penguin Random House seeking to stop the publication, distribution and commercialization of ‘Traición en Palacio.’

Subsequently, on May 22, he received a notification of a new process, now through civil proceedings, against him and publisher Penguin Random House, in which he is being sued for moral damages. These lawsuits and complaints send a message of restriction to freedom of expression, reinforcing a growing trend in the use of Mexican law to censor information of public relevance.”
