“From January 2016 to December 2025, at least 89 journalists, eight media workers and 181 human rights defenders were killed in Mexico in possible connection with their work.
In addition, the U.N. Human Rights Office documented that 14 journalists and media workers, along with 13 human rights defenders, survived attempted killings. It also recorded that 25 journalists, one media worker and 43 defenders were disappeared during the same period.
There were a total of 376 victims; 80 of them women, and at least 105 environmental defenders. Seventy percent had previously suffered attacks, and approximately 30% had filed complaints with law enforcement authorities. Seventy-two had security measures in place before they were killed.”
