"The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) warned this Thursday [May 22] of 'constant attacks' against human rights defenders and journalists in Honduras, and expressed concern about the 'serious difficulties' faced by the National Protection System (SNP, for its initials in Spanish) in responding effectively.

In a statement, the OHCHR indicated that it 'continues to monitor and document ongoing attacks against human rights defenders and journalists' and notes 'with concern that the SNP faces serious difficulties that compromise its capacity to respond, due to weak inter-institutional ties, a lack of sufficient budget and human resources, constant staff turnover, and the absence of specialized training processes.'

Ten years after the enactment of the Law for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders, Journalists, Social Communicators, and Justice Officials, the Office urged the State of Honduras to take 'urgent measures' to ensure that the country ceases to be 'a dangerous place' for the defense of human rights."
