Venezuela: September was month with highest number of press freedom violation cases; 16 radio stations were shut down

"[News outlet Espacio Público says] September closed as the month with the highest number of cases of violations of freedom of expression so far in 2022. We documented 27 cases and a total of 68 violations of the right to freedom of expression and more than half were acts of censorship.

The main victims of violations of this fundamental right in September were the media (21). This was followed by the general public, victims on at least 11 occasions, and six journalists/reporters.

In September alone, we documented a total of 16 radio stations closed by orders of Conatel. Eleven of those closures (69 %) occurred in the state of Zulia and the other five stations that were taken off the air are in the state of Sucre."
