"A total of 913 journalists have been forced to leave their countries in Latin America from 2018 to 2024 to protect their lives, safety, or freedom. This is according to the report “Displaced Voices: An X-ray of Latin American Journalistic Exile 2018–2024,” published by Proledi at the University of Costa Rica, along with Fundamedios (USA) and the UNESCO Chair at Diego Portales University in Chile.
The study identified Venezuela (477 cases), Nicaragua (268), and Cuba (98) as the three countries responsible for 92.31% of all journalistic exile in the region.
These are followed, with lower figures, by Guatemala (19), Ecuador (13), Haiti (10), and El Salvador (10). The rest of the countries recorded low or minimal departures. In total, the phenomenon affects at least 15 countries on the continent."
