Venezuelan press institute issues 'Journalists in Exile' report on Venezuelan press diaspora

"Venezuelan journalists have had to flee the country to safeguard their lives, personal safety and freedom, as they face systematic persecution by the government. The report 'Journalists in Exile: An Approach to the Venezuelan Press Diaspora,' by the Venezuelan Press and Society Institute (IPYS Venezuela), shows how media professionals have been harassed for their work documenting, reporting, and disseminating information, leading to forced displacement and even being recognized as refugees entitled to international protection.

This study finds that the majority of the journalists surveyed (63.68%) emigrated between 2016 and 2020, the years of greatest scarcity of food and essential goods in the country. Meanwhile, between 2021 and 2024, 27 surveyed journalists emigrated, indicating that the exodus has continued despite the challenges of international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic."
