"The violence that spread across 20 Mexican states following the killing of [alleged criminal leader] Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as 'El Mencho,' also reached members of the press. According to Article 19, at least eight attacks against journalists were documented Sunday [Feb. 22] amid a wave of roadblocks and other criminal acts.
In posts on social media, the press freedom organization reported two attacks in Guanajuato, two in Jalisco, two in Tamaulipas, one in Michoacán and one in Sinaloa. The incidents were allegedly carried out by organized crime groups or unidentified individuals.

Amid heightened security risks, Article 19 called on federal and state authorities to fulfill their obligation to protect journalists and ensure conditions that safeguard freedom of expression. The organization also urged news outlets to strengthen and activate safety protocols for reporters, particularly those covering violent events."
