Brazilian press faced attacks every five days in 2024, report says

“In 2024, the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (ABERT for its initials in Portuguese) report on violations of freedom of expression recorded 72 cases of non-lethal violence involving at least 84 journalists and media outlets. Despite a 54% reduction in the number of cases, the data shows the Brazilian press faced some form of attack every five days.

The figures were close to those of 2019, when the lowest number of violations against journalistic work was recorded. That year, there were 56 cases, involving at least 78 professionals and media outlets.

For the third time since 2012, when ABERT began monitoring violence against media professionals, no Brazilian journalists were killed for exercising their profession. Only in 2019, 2021, and 2024 did the Brazilian press not suffer lethal violence.

Violence against journalists occurred in various Brazilian cities, but the north and southeast regions saw the highest rates of physical assaults. Men were the primary victims, and TV professionals were the main targets of aggressors dissatisfied with the media coverage. Politicians and public officials were the primary perpetrators of the assaults, followed by police or security agents.”
