“The prolonged state of exception in El Salvador, in place since March 2022 to combat gangs, continues to erode freedom of expression and has raised concerns among regional and international human rights bodies, Amnesty International said in its annual report on Monday.
According to the organization, "the prolonged state of emergency continued eroding freedom of expression," noting that attacks against journalists and media outlets increased by 66% in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the Salvadoran Journalists Association (APES for its initials in Spanish).”
