"Brazil’s federal government on Thursday signed an agreement with the family of journalist Vladimir Herzog, who was tortured and killed by the military dictatorship in 1975. The symbolic act was formalized by Attorney General Jorge Messias and the journalist’s son, Ivo Herzog, at the headquarters of the Vladimir Herzog Institute in São Paulo.
‘The same state that committed violence—violence recognized by both the Brazilian judiciary and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights—is once again here to apologize, acknowledge rights, and renew its ethical and political commitment to keeping alive the ongoing fight for democracy,’ Messias said."
