"Guatemalan journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín turned 69 on Tuesday, with his son, Ramón Zamora, saying his father has spent the last four birthdays in 'arbitrary' detention.
The founder and former editor of the newspaper El Periódico was arrested in July 2022 and has been held in pretrial detention ever since, with the exception of a three-month period when he was granted house arrest.
Ramón Zamora said his father is his ‘greatest example of dignity and courage: he reminds me that staying true to your convictions is always worth it.’ He also called his father's detention ‘arbitrary.’
Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, also posted about Zamora's birthday on social media."
