Journalists in the Amazon face violence, lack of resources and disinformation

"[Reporters Without Borders, RSF] found that the challenges facing journalists in the Amazon can be grouped into three categories:

  • direct violence against journalists — in the form of threats, assaults and prosecution;
  • structural precariousness and the lack of resources affecting community radio stations, local newspapers, and Indigenous media networks, which creates inequalities in news coverage and weakens editorial independence;
  • the spread of disinformation, which exploits these weaknesses to confuse local populations and society at large."
