Colombia’s Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP, by its acronym in Spanish) rejected the death threats reported by journalist Gonzalo Guillén and warned they represent an attack on press freedom.
Guillén said on social media on March 26 that he had received information about an alleged plan to kill him, allegedly coordinated from a prison in Bogotá and backed by financial resources.
In a statement, FLIP said the threats may be linked to Guillén’s reporting on corruption and organized crime, which has led to the conviction of powerful figures, suggesting possible retaliation for his work. The organization urged Colombian authorities to strengthen the protection of the journalist, investigate the threats and identify those responsible.
