Cameraman struck by pyrotechnics during disturbance at soccer match in Colombia

“A Brazilian cameraman accompanying ESPN reporter Lilly Nascimento was struck by explosives and flares before the start of the match between [the Colombian soccer team] Independiente Medellín and [Brazil’s] Flamengo at Atanasio Girardot Stadium in Medellín, Colombia.

During the broadcast, the network showed a burned backpack and reported that the cameraman’s pants were also burned before the referee authorized the start of the match. Despite the incident, the reporting crew was unharmed.

The match […] had to be interrupted in the opening minutes following a major disturbance caused by fans of the Colombian team. […] Explosives, fireworks and flares were thrown onto the field, especially behind the goal defended by [Agustín] Rossi. Some of the objects also landed near the press area. Fans even set part of the stands on fire.”
