Both Reuters, Huffington Post announce web TV projects

Taking advantage of YouTube's massive audience -- the online site streams 4 billion videos a day and one hour of video is uploaded every second -- the Reuters news agency has announced the launch of Reuters TV, which will offer 10 different shows on the Reuters YouTube channel, according to Mashable.

Reuters TV will offer a mix of news and analysis, but it won't "just be CNN, MSNBC, or FOX News recreated for YouTube," explained the Nieman Journalism Lab, quoting Barclay Palmer, Reuters global executive producer, who said, “We are deliberately not doing television on the web.”

The question, however, is whether a partnership with YouTube can succeed, seeing as how YouTube is known more for is entertainment content than as a news portal, the Nieman Lab added.

Meanwhile, the Huffington Post also has announced plans to launch a 24-hour online TV network, reported Forbes. The Huffington Post Streaming Network, or HPSN, will offer live programming and is set to be previewed Feb. 2. In theory the new network would be competing with the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, which both offer live online programming, Mashable noted.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange also is getting into the television business, he announced Monday, Jan. 23, on the WikiLeaks site. It still is unknown where Assange's show, a series of interviews with "key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries," would be broadcast or on which networks, although the show is set to air in mid-March, according to Gizmodo.
