In Peru, ruling party opposes the signing of Chapultepec and Salta declarations for press freedom

"[The ruling party] Peru Libre issued a statement on Sunday [Sept. 26] opposing that President Pedro Castillo sign the declarations of Chapultepec and Salta, which guarantee freedom of expression and of the press. On Sept. 9, it was reported that the Peruvian Press Council (CPP) invited the president to sign both commitments.

In a meeting at the Government Palace on Sept. 8, the president of the CPP, María Eugenia Mohme, and the executive director, Rodrigo Salazar, expressed to President Castillo the need to respect and promote freedom of expression and of the press for the benefit of Peruvian democracy, in view of recent attacks on journalists, the limitations that exist on their daily work and the violation of at least five of the ten points of the Declaration of Chapultepec by the government."
