"The ninth judge of the criminal trial district of Managua, Luden Martín Quiroz García, confirmed the sentences of between 7 and 13 years in prison requested by the Public Ministry [of Nicaragua] against the five implicated in the case known as Fundación Violeta Barrios de Chamorro (FVBCH).

Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, former director of the FVBCH and former Nicaraguan presidential candidate, was sentenced to eight years in prison: five for the crime of money laundering and three for misappropriation, and a fine equivalent to three times the amount allegedly washed.

'You are criminalizing me for training journalists and justice is being used not to tell the truth. If I have been the conduit to receive these donations and train journalists, it is because I am an honest person. I have never taken any money from the FVBCH for my own benefit because I was educated with great values and I have not had the need to do so either,' added Cristiana Chamorro Barrios, who has been under house arrest since June 2, 2021.
