Journalists and representatives from journalism organizations from throughout Latin America and the Caribbean are coming together for two days of discussion on coverage of drug trafficking and organized crime at the 8th Austin Forum on Journalism in the Americas, Sept. 17-18, 2010, in Austin, Texas.
Organized by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and the Open Society Foundations programs on Latin America and the media, the event will focus on such questions as:
* Should reporting on drug trafficking in the Americas go beyond more than gang wars and body counts? And if so, how?
* What can be done to help reporters and editors who work in hostile environments under dangerous, stressful conditions?
* What practical measures can reporters take when covering violence?

This year's focus on drug trafficking and organized crime coincides with the Knight Center's release of its latest e-book, Journalism in Times of Threats, Censorship and Violence. The book, available for free download in both Spanish and English, is a report about covering drug trafficking and violence on the U.S./Mexican border.
