The government of Álvaro Colom has denounced a supposed plot to destabilize the country by various groups who are supported by "biased media" that "sell their pens to the highest bidder,” reported Siglo XXI and EFE.
According to Prensa Libre, Guatemalan mainstream media have rejected these allegations, denouncing them as a campaign to discredit the press. Business owners also came out in defense of the media, that in their view publish stories promoting transparency and accountability.
In a column in elPeriódico, Gustavo Berganza attributed the government's accusations to its weakened power and influence. “The government has weakened itself" with its policies, the article concluded.
