Argentine newspaper accuses oil company of pulling advertising in retaliation for story

By Maira Magro

The newspaper La Nación and the oil company YPF are engaged in a public fight over the company's advertising policy and the newspaper's editorial agenda, according to the newspaper Los Andes.

In a letter sent to YPF, directors at La Nación complained that the newspaper is being excluded from company advertising in retaliation for its independent coverage. In an editorial titled “Capitalism of Friends,” published July 11, La Nación accuses the Argentine government of favoring some local businesses, such as YPF. As a result of the article, according to La Nación, the oil company pulled its ads.

YPF responded with a statement published in several Argentine newspapers on Sunday, July 18, accusing La Nación of extortion and of using its editorial agenda to "denigrate those who are not loyal advertisers."
