Press freedom under attack as Day of the Journalist approaches

As Venezuela prepares to celebrate the Day of the Journalist on Sunday, June 27, journalists in that country have found themselves confronting in the past two weeks numerous challenges to the freedom of expression, according to an analysis in El Tiempo.

For example, Últimas Noticias was attacked with explosives, the editors of the the website Noticiero Digital were sued, and an arrest warrant was issued for the owner of Globovisión, Guillermo Zuloaga.

Meanwhile, the National Journalists Guild (CNP) declared a state of emergency and ex-board members have rejected a proposal brought forward by the association Journalists for Truth and other groups aligned with the government that would potentially do away with the CNP and create an official institution, according to Globovisión.
