José Alemán, a correspondent for Tiempo newspaper and Radio América, decided to leave the country after two armed men broke into his home and fired their guns in his bedroom last Sunday in the town of San Marcos, Ocotepeque, the Committee to Protect Journalists reports.
Earlier that day, he received a call warning him to stop reporting the news. That call came 20 minutes after Radio América broadcast his report about a local shooting between police and alleged criminals. Alemán sought refuge at the local police station overnight before leaving the country.
His departure comes after five Honduran journalists were killed in a 30-day period. The wave of violence against journalists led the national human rights agency to seek measures from the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to take measures to protect Honduran journalists, La Tribuna says.
