A Cuban photographer defected to the United States while covering the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, reported Café Fuerte, a Cuban news website based in Miami.
Daniel Anaya, 35 years-old, worked for the National Institute of Sports and Recreation and arrived in Mexico on Oct. 9. He fled the Cuban delegation before the Games started on Oct. 14. Currently, Anaya is in the United States, reported the news agency EFE.
Under the Cuban Refugee Adjustment Act of 1966, any Cubans that enter the United States and and stay for one year are eligible for U.S. residency.
Cuba sent 442 athletes to the XVI Pan American Games in 2011. In 2007, four Cuban athletes defected to Brazil and Germany during the Pan American Games hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
