Dominican Republic correspondent in Miami warns of threats to the press

Rose Mary Santana, journalist for several Dominican media outlets in Florida, became the president of the Dominican Journalists Council in Miami. She noted that some of the powers that be "see a journalist as an enemy when they practice investigative journalism," a statement from the same organization read.

Santana is a correspondent for the publications Primicias, Acento, El Observador and El Nuevo Diario in the Dominican Republic. Last year, she was denied an interview with author Ángeles Trujillo, daughter of the ex-dictator of the Caribbean island, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, during a presentation of her book, Trujillo, My Father in My Memories.

"Journalists and the media are here to inform society and keep powerful interests from tricking the people," Santana said in her acceptance speech in Miami.
