Guatemalan hydroelectric company threatens to take legal action for defamation

A Guatemalan subsidiary of the Spanish hydroelectric company Hidralia Energía released a warning that it would take legal and criminal actions against those who spread defamation and libel against the company, reported the Center of Informative Reports of Guatemala.

The warning was released after the Guatemalan authorities accused two security guards of the hydroelectric company Hidro Santa Cruz of killing a peasant farmer in the town of Barillas, an indigenous community that is against the hydroelectric plant construction in the area, according to the newspaper Siglo 21.

However, it isn't clear if this legal threat includes journalists and the press, or if it is addressed to the prosecutor and public minister that told the press about the situation, reported the newspaper elPeriódico.
