Guyanese President Bharrat Jagdeo decided to postpone the four-month suspension against the private opposition television broadcaster CNS until Dec.1, instead of the original Oct. 3 date, according to Reporters Without Borders.
President Jagdeo ordered the temporary suspension of the television station on Sept. 30, arguing that the channel incited religious intolerance.
Jagdeo also announced that Guyana's presidential elections would take place on Nov. 28 so as not to coincide with the regional elections.
The postponed sentence means the station will be allowed to cover the elections normally. "But the postponement does not resolve the core problem. This is an act of censorship that was decided personally by the president in reprisal for an interviewee’s comment on the air last May," wrote Reporters Without Borders. The press freedom organization recommended lifting the suspension all together.
