The director of the community radio station La Voz de Zacate Grande, who also is a peasant leader in the island of Zacate in the south of Honduras, was shot in the leg and hospitalized March 13, reported the newspaper La Prensa Gráfica.
Franklin Meléndez was attacked by two critics of the radio station's stance in support of a peasants group that opposes a local biofuels magnate, explained Reporters Without Borders.
Meléndez was accompanied by a representative of an international human rights observation mission and two correspondents from the radio station when he was attacked, the Association for Development in the Zacate Grande Peninsula said in a statement.
Last December, two journalists from the radio station were arrested and police confiscated their equipment.
Various community radio stations have been threatened and harassed in recent months amid the growing violence in the country, which claimed the lives of 10 journalists in 2010 and prompted the Honduran government and journalists union to look toward an agreement to decrease the amount of violence images that are published in the press.
