Suspects identified in killing of journalist in Dominican Republic

Authorities in the Dominican Republic have idenitified a suspect in the killing of TV journalist José Silvestre, reported the newspaper 7 Días in Santo Domingo. According to the newspaper, businessman Matías Avelino Castro, alias "Daniel" or Joaquín Espinal Almeyda, is suspected of masterminding the killing of Silvestre.

Authorities also identified Ángel Mañón Gutiérrez as one the supposed killers, who, according to police, confessed. Authorities also said they confiscated a gun used to beat and kill the journalist earlier this month.

“Daniel” is wanted by police, and Mañón Gutiérrez has been arrested, according to Antena Latina.

The motive for the crime, according to authorities, was information published in the magazine La Voz de la Verdad, that accused the businessman of being responsible for several bloody incidents in the city of La Romana.

Silvestre had been threatened by alleged drug traffickers, reported El Informe. The journalist also had written about supposed ties between drug traffickers and the La Romana prosecutor.
