Documented Semanal [Documented Weekly] is one of the media initiatives aimed at Hispanic communities in the United States that have managed to work around WhatsApp’s restrictions to distribute content to large audiences. This project plus academic research behind other similar cases were presented at the 16th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism.
For its second panel, the 16th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism dealt with the theme “Diversity in Latin American news and newsrooms.” The panelists discussed advances as well as challenges in the region, such as disinformation and digital violence against women journalists.
The 16th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism will take place following the ISOJ on Sunday, April 16, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (U.S. Central Time) at UT Austin. The Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism celebrated its 15-year anniversary with a return in person and online. For the last two years, the conference was virtual because of the pandemic.
The panel “Lessons and innovative cases,” of the 15th Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism, brought together journalists, directors and editors from Latin America to present effective models that emerge from the coming together of technological tools and good journalism.
The media accelerator Fondo Velocidad supported, trained and financed improvements to ten digital media outlets in nine Latin American countries. Thanks to the program, the ten participating media outlets achieved a total income of more than 5 million dollars in the last two years.
Collaboration among notable fact-checking organizations from Latin America and Spain has made possible important global data verification initiatives such as LATAMChequea, #CoronaVirusFacts Alliance and, more recently, #UkraineFacts.
Borja Echevarría, deputy director of the Spanish newspaper El País, spoke with Rosental Alves, director of the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, about the success of the newspaper's digital subscription model, which is expected to reach 200,000 subscribers in two years. He also spoke about the site's new graphic design and the role of podcasts in bringing readers and journalists closer.
A total of 45 journalists and media executives from Latin America, Spain and Portugal gathered April 3 in Austin for the Fourth Ibero-American Colloquium on Digital Journalism, where they discussed experiences and exchanged ideas about online journalism in the region.
