This year's Ortega y Gasset Journalism Awards, presented annually since 1984 by Spanish newspaper El País, will honor the career of Nicaraguan writer, journalist and lawyer Sergio Ramírez.
"As a journalist and columnist, he has always shown a deep commitment to human dignity. His articles have been and continue to be a moral compass for millions of people who yearn for freedom throughout Latin America," the jury said about Ramírez, who has been a regular contributor to El País for more than three decades.
In addition to Ramírez, Nobel Laureate in Literature and Belarusian journalist Svetlana Alexievich and American journalist and newspaper editor Martin Baron will also be honored. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in Barcelona on May 4, the day El País celebrates its 50th anniversary, the newspaper announced.
