Another Salvadoran news outlet, FocosTV, relocates to Costa Rica

"The Salvadoran news outlet FocosTV announced Thursday it is moving its operations to Costa Rica, citing 'repression by a government that seeks to silence critical voices' in El Salvador. The outlet described the move as forced displacement.

In a video statement, a representative of FocosTV said the Salvadoran government is using the state of emergency to persecute dissent and also applying laws designed for that purpose, such as the Foreign Agents Law, which imposes oversight and taxes on entities and individuals funded by foreign organizations.

“The Foreign Agents Law and the state of emergency are the two main tools of this repressive policy,” the outlet said in an editorial, adding that “Costa Rica currently offers the legal stability we need to continue our democratic mission: to inform Salvadorans.”

FocosTV emphasized it has published several investigations into the current government. “Anyone who dares to question it will face exile, censorship or prison,” the outlet said in the video shared on social media, which included images of detained activists such as Ruth Eleonora López, Salvador Enrique Anaya and Alejandro Henríquez."
