The Foundation Journalists Unbound (FPSC for its initials in Spanish) reported 22 attacks against media workers in Ecuador in August 2025, including the killings of journalists and allegations of undercover police infiltrating press chats, making it one of the most violent months for journalism in the country.
From January through August, the FPSC recorded a total of 168 attacks against journalists and media outlets.
It is the first time since the 2018 kidnapping of a Diario El Comercio reporting team that two journalists and one media worker have been killed in a single month. In 2022, a total of three journalists were killed across the entire year, not within a single month.
