"[Brazilian] Supreme Federal Court Minister Cármen Lúcia, in a definitive decision, overturned the determination of the Mato Grosso Court to seize the cell phones and computers of two journalists in the state. Alexandre Aprá and Enoch Cavalcanti had written and published reports and opinion articles about Orlando de Almeida Perri, from the Court of Justice of Mato Grosso. State Governor Mauro Mendes felt offended by the articles as he considered them insinuating illicit relationships between him and Perri. This led to the opening of a police investigation during which the police operation that collected the journalists' devices was allowed.

The minister's decision, under judicial secrecy, highlights her concern 'with full respect for the right to inform and be informed and freedom of the press, ruling out any form of censorship, particularly of judicial nature.' Cármen Lúcia also detailed that the seizure of cell phones violates the confidentiality of the source because it could reveal information about the journalistic investigation before it is even published."
