Brazil: Murder of Dom Phillips will be followed by the new Observatory of Violence Against Journalists

"The National Secretary of Justice, Augusto Arruda Botelho, informed Abraji on Tues. (Jan. 24, 2023) that the murder of British journalist Dom Phillips will be included in the cases monitored by the recently announced National Observatory on Violence Against Journalists.


On Mon. (Jan. 23, 2023), the Federal Police informed that the investigation into the deaths of Dom Phillips and of the Indigenous activist Bruno Pereira is being concluded. The main suspect in the killings is Ruben Dario da Silva Villar, known as Colombia, who controlled illegal fishing in the region. The killings occurred in June of last year, in Vale do Javari, in the Amazon. Three other participants in the crime were denounced by the Federal Public Ministry in the process that investigates the murders."
