The Federation of Journalists of Peru (FPP, for its acronym in Spanish) strongly rejected and condemned the intimidation and threats against journalist Luis Fernando Ramos Tenazoa, former president of the Federated Center of Journalists of Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon.
On Aug. 26, the organization issued a statement denouncing that Ramos Tenazoa had received death threats on social media and that his Facebook profile had been manipulated to announce his alleged death.
“These acts of intimidation, apparently linked to his journalistic investigation of the former regional governor of [the department of] Loreto, Fernando Meléndez Celis, constitute a serious attack on press freedom and the right of citizens to be informed,” the release said
The FPP demanded that the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Peruvian National Police conduct “a swift and thorough investigation to identify and punish those responsible for these threats.” It also called on authorities to urgently provide personal guarantees to safeguard the journalist's life and physical integrity.
