"Guatemala’s Supreme Court has accepted a legal appeal (amparo) filed by the defense of journalist José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, challenging a ruling by an Appeals Court that ordered his preventive detention. However, his release from prison has yet to be resolved.
In a statement released Sunday [June 29], the Supreme Court announced it had provisionally suspended the March decision by the Third Court of Appeals, which had reinstated Zamora Marroquín’s pretrial detention. The Court clarified that the acceptance of the legal appeal was made solely to compel the Appeals Court to respond to the grievances raised by the journalist’s defense.
This is why the decision of Zamora Marroquín's permanence in prison is once again in the hands of the same Third Court of Appeals, which has been widely criticized in Guatemala by various sectors due to its rulings in high impact cases."
