"The Inter-American Press Association (IAPA) and the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP), representatives of the Chaparro and Torres families, celebrate the decision taken by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to study the case of the journalists Julio Daniel Chaparro and Jorge Torres, who were assassinated on April 24, 1991. This decision is a significant advance in the fight that relatives of the victims have had to wage for 30 years to gain access to justice and the truth, and to exalt the memory of the journalists.
On July 28, the IACHR decided to declare the case of journalists Julio Daniel Chaparro and Jorge Torres against the Colombian State admissible. This means that the Commission will study the merits of the case and determine whether or not the State was responsible for the absence of a due investigation and punishment of those responsible for the murder of the journalists, events that remain unpunished."
